Many marketers online know what search engine optimization or SEO is but simply don't know how to do it effectively to get traffic to their website. Therefore, many people are left with the decision to hire an SEO company, use PPC advertising, or simply not to optimize their website at all.

Search engine traffic is important because it represents about 80% of internet traffic that is generated everyday on the internet. What that means is that, 80% of the users online start their day via search engine and browsing on a particular topic. If you can harness this traffic for your business, then it would mean a tremendous amount of extra sales and revenue for you.

Although I think you should learn how to optimize your website yourself, if you're a newbie to internet marketing, you should hire a professional to do it for you. It all depends on your goals and plans for your website, and how much money you're willing to invest in your business.

SEO can be very challenging, but it's not that hard where you can't learn it yourself. The one thing that you will have to realize however is that, if you try to optimize your website for yourself, you're detracting time from another area of your business that you could be working on. So if you're optimizing your site, that means you can't do article marketing or video marketing right now because all of your time is dedicated towards ranking high in the search engines.

You will have to make the decision as to whether or not which internet marketing strategy is more important, and will have to prioritize accordingly. However, if you hired an SEO specialist, you can work on any aspect of your business that you want, but keep in mind that it's not your time you're investing here - it's your money. So once again, prioritizing is key.

For the sake of conversation however, this article will discuss how to optimize your website yourself, because I think it is an invaluable skill that will come in handy for you one day.

You should know that there are a variety of factors or "algorithms" that search engines use to rank your website. Some of these factors include your webpage content, the keyword you are trying to rank high for, the amount of traffic you're currently receiving, links pointing to your website, meta tags, and even your webpage title. We will discuss all of these factors briefly now.

Your webpage content means everything to the search engine robots and to your users. You will want quality content that users will find helpful and useful, and that brings repeat visitors back to your website. Remember, you're building your website for your visitors, not the search engines, so keep that in mind.

For every webpage that you offer valuable information on a particular topic, you will want at least 300 words on that page. Also, you will want the keywords that you're targeting distributed evenly throughout the page in order to let the search engines know what your page is about.

This is also where keyword density comes into play. Keyword density simply means how many times your targeted keyword is appearing throughout your webpage. You will also want your main keyword in the title of your webpage. However, something that you don't want to do is pollute your webpage with a certain keyword.

You don't want to spam your webpage with relevant keywords because the search engine robots will think that you're trying to manipulate them, and will penalize your website for it. A good rule of thumb as far as keyword density is that it should be 3% to 5% of your total page content. So if you have a 300 page article, you will want your targeted keywords to appear 9 to 15 times throughout your article.

Your meta tags is what the search engine robots use as a description in the search engine results. They are important because it tells the robots immediately what your site is about, and tells them the overall theme of that particular webpage. Web users will find this useful also because when they find your listing in the search engine results, what they are looking at is simply a reflection of your meta tag information. So it's important that you make your meta tag description as relevant as possible.

And last links pointing to your website is important because it tells the search engines how popular your website is. You should know that one-way links are better than two-way links, simply because of what they suggest.

One-way links to your site suggests that someone found information on your website useful, and that they wanted to share it with their users. Two-way links suggest that you went out and asked for a link in order to boost your popularity. Nothing is wrong with two-way links, but one-way is just far superior. However, both with increase your search engine rankings.

Use these tips to start improving your search engine rankings today. If you do decide not to go with an SEO specialist, then you will find that search engine optimization is really just another simple thing to learn.
